VW “Cars” Stop Motion Project

I had a riot working on this piece, which was done just for fun. The car in the spot is an 05' VW Jetta. The idea for this hit me when I was opening a car's glove box, and it seemed to operate much like a human mouth. After looking around the car, every part seemed like it had the potential to adopt some kind of voice or movement. I wanted to make the car sing and dance, and what better song than "Cars"? I had to go back to my 90's metal-head days and pull out Fear Factory's cover of "Cars" to give it that extra boost. Awesome song from a fantastic album, was off "Obsolete".

This project was shot in just a few hours one Saturday afternoon on the parking garage roof of SCAD Atlanta. I think over 700 photos were taken with my old Nikon D300 (before I switched to Canon!). I had a tripod and a make-shift dolly that I used for those low shots, like where the camera is inching towards the grill. The bulk of this project was actually done in Photoshop. Each scene had a base layer that was cleaned up and treated. Then, all the moving parts were cut out and isolated on layers in their moving order. Once those PSDs came in to AE, the moving layers could be easily animated while making overarching camera moves, like push-ins or pans. The photos were huge, so I could move around in each scene quite a bit once in AE. Watching this makes me want to do more stop-motion work!
