Pitch: New visual identity for the building of the Museum of Communication Berne.
Concept:
In the spring semester 2013 of my Master’s Degree in Communication Design at the HKB my colleagues and I were asked to create a new visual concept for one of two buildings in Berne. This «Archigrafie» project should create a perfect union of graphic design and architecture.

My project partner David Leßmann and I chose the Museum of Communication Berne. The main problems of the building are its three totally different parts, its location and proximity to other buildings.

After a detailed analytical investigation we decided to enhance the facade of the main building by installing bands that run around the building to emphasise its architectural character and serve as an installation platform for the new typography.
For this action we used powder-coated aluminum in an anthracite hue that was already used for the window frames and the awnings of the main building. In addition to that we used the same colour for the new paint of the foyer and the café.

Even though it was not the main goal of the project, we created a concept for the interior orientation system that assimilates the band concept of the facade.

As a special request of our professors we built a number of models for the concept. These included a 1:1 model of the smallest font hight that we would use – also showing the lighting concept and a 1:20 model of the facade. For this and many other things we want to thank Urs Gebauer and his great team of the HKB work shop for their help and support throughout the whole semester.
