Surface Manipulation
Event Poster for SFSU
An exploration of texture
Type choices
An exploration of hierarchy and composition.
Final textures included, all of which were from my kitchen.
The heart of this project, for me, was finding textural surfaces. At the beginning, I simply walked around my house and the places I frequent to look for interesting textures. A week into my process, I gravitated to my kitchen as it is a place I can not only be creative, but experimental. Over the following days, I documented the textures I found in my kitchen, while thinking about how texture informs many aspects of making. Texture shows me when my bread dough is done proofing, when it’s mixed, when it’s been baked enough, and basically every aspect and stage of cooking. Texture also informs taste and smell.
Once textures were set in place, it was all about developing hierarchy and typesetting. I chose Proxima Nova, as I thought a nice sans serif paired well with all my very organic textures.
In my process, when I thought I was ‘done’, I did a quick print and tiling. After tiling, certain hierarchical and type tweaks became apparent, and I’m so glad I did this quick, primitive prototyping. From past experience, I know the juxtaposition between a screen and a printed file can feel like a different piece of work completely. After some edits, and painstaking decisions about locations of boxes, I felt ready to print my final iteration.
