MA Project: Message Delivered.

I am studying a masters degree in graphic design at the University of Falmouth, which I study part time around my full time job. We get given weekly briefs with 1 week to complete the lectures, research and the brief. This weeks brief:

Communicate an emotion you perceive your city or location is about. Take the word and use an appropriate material, form or medium – 2D, digital, 3D or immersive.
i have recently moved from London to Stevenage, so I walked around with my eyes closed to focus in on just listening to the street, and all I could hear were the planes. We moved during lockdown though when there were no flights, so after a few months of being here and everything started going back to normal, we realised we were on a flight path.

For this reason, I have chosen my word to be 'peaceful', but have the juxtaposition of the flight paths and noise pollution.

I found this image of the flight paths over Stevenage (above), red being arrivals and blue departures, it reminded me of thread so I thought I'd try to recreate it using the thread I have. I started using a needle into the paper, but I couldn't get the curves, so I did it just loosely, even though it looks a bit messy and doesn't have the same curves, I thought it looks pretty interesting and just shows how busy and hectic the sky is.
Inspired by Non-Formats typeface design using frayed peaces of materials, I tried to do something similar using the thread as a typeface. From there I went back to my other scanned image. Firstly, I thought I'd throwback to school when we used to draw a squiggly line in paint and then fill the gaps in with the paint bucket tool. I did this whilst trying to create the word 'peaceful'.
Next I did some with the scan in the background and the typeface over the top, and then another with layer masks. I then combined the two and thought his worked pretty well as a juxtoposition.
I thought back to the brief: How can a message be enhanced through the medium in which it is implemented? So I started playing around with packaging mock-ups of earplugs, and now I think the message has been enhanced by the medium.
