Artist Statement

My personal art is a reflection of what connects me to life. I have an appreciation of history and nature that often makes an appearance in my artwork. I am not tied to a specific media to tell a story, evoke a feeling or inspire a thought. I have a love of photography, collage, mixed media as well as computer generated design. As a Graphic Designer/Marketing major, however, I view myself as the artistic conduit through which my client can express their creativity and bring their concepts to visual life.

For my Senior Show, I was drawn to “market” a popular literary work, “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll rather than market a product or business that may or may not have a broad reach or universal appeal. My desire is to respect the vintage nature of the original literary work and illustrations but present it in a nontraditional multi media manner that sparks a novel response, surprising the viewer, yet maintaining the comfort of the familiar childhood tale. I pride myself on the artwork itself being well crafted, and although I am not averse to happy accidents, I generally design very intentionally. My love of typography is also a strong component of my work as I believe in the power of words particularly when presented in a creative design that communicates beyond the words themselves.

Please immerse yourselves in Wonderland.
Concordia University Wisconsin Senior Show Presentation

I wanted to create a whimsical atmosphere reminicent of a tea party from Alice in Wonderland.

Work includes
- a hand-built table and one chair cut in half, each stenciled and painted
- a shadow box giving the history of the story
- five handmade 3D objects depicting each of the characters
- five business cards for each of the characters
- five typographic quote posters
"The Making of Wonderland" History Shadow Box
The White Rabbit

An oversized pocketwatch was created to represent the White Rabbit. The outer portion was built up with aluminum foil, painted black and tissue paper was applied to give texture. The Rabbit's coined phrase "I'm late" sits below etched glass and unique clock hands.
Alice

A found vintage bottle was etched with the phrase "Drink me" to represent Alice. A corresponding tag was designed and tied around the neck of the bottle.
The Cheshire Cat

A tree was formed from wire, covered in paper mache, built up with modeling paste, painted black and dry brushed to add texture. John Tenniel's original image of the Cheshire Cat was applied to a mirror with water decal paper.
The Mad Hatter

A found tea cup was decorated with text and imagery designed on the computer, printed on water decal paper, and then adhered.
The Queen of Hearts

A card box's packaging and tumbling cards were designed on the computer and brought to life.
