Board-certified Psychiatrist, Wayne Macfadden, MD, has worked in various psychiatric treatment facilities as a director and doctor. While working as a psychiatrist for Spirit Lake Reservation, Wayne Macfadden, MD, was responsible for treating opiate use disorders in addition to general psychiatric problems.

Drug overdose death increased by five percent from 2018 to 2019, and more than 70 percent of overdose deaths were opioid-involved. Since 1999, deaths from opioids have worsened with increased prescription of opioids. Around this time, the first wave of opioid overdose deaths occurred. The second wave was in 2010 where many states witnessed an increase in heroin overdose deaths. The third was in 2013 when a significant increase in deaths involving synthetic opioids was recorded. Synthetic opioids include cocaine and fentanyl.

In 2019, there were 50,000 opioid-involved deaths. Opioid abuse and addiction, which includes prescription pain medications, heroin, and synthetic opioids, is now a severe national epidemic that harms public health and the economy. According to the CDC, the economic burden is $78.5 billion a year with healthcare costs, reduced productivity, treatment, and criminal justice involvement combined.
