Time - Hans Zimmer - Remix

I couldn't help but make an interpretation of this incredible piece by Hans Zimmer. It's a great example of the brilliance of simplicity! It is a completely different ball game to produce a mix without vocals; what usually is the background becomes the foreground. It was great to explore what the sounds and instruments can do by themselves.

Here are a few details about the process I went through:

On the design: The pads and pluck lead are designed with inspiration from the soft, surging, and rounded sounds of Kygo. The percussive risers and build ups are multi layered that adds dimension, like I've observed in the songs of Martin Garrix. The sounds are designed with the intention of capturing the bright, spacious, and rich grandeur that i envisioned for this interpretation of the original by the brilliant Hans Zimmer.

On the composition/arrangement: I had a lot of creative freedom as the only elements i borrowed from the original was the essence of the harmony along with the motifs built around the four notes that the piece reduces down to. This allowed me to pretty much compose this remix as a song by itself. In the song's structure, I've also attempted to incorporate the phenomenal pre drop style that is very characteristic of Avicii, which magically makes the drop all the more satisfying.

On the mix and mastering: The mix is all about assigning the sounds their own space (in terms of the three defining aspects of a sound: amplitude, frequency, and timbre, plus an added dimension of depth and direction). The mix is the balance that ensures sufficient variety in all aspects whilst keeping it all glued together. It probably took me well over a hundred complete session listenings to bring the mix to satisfaction, the drums being especially challenging. Finally, the mastering is what prepares the session for export so that the listener receives what they are meant to. This can make or break the entire song, so it demands that much attention.
