Alcohol Transfers - 2021

I was introduced to the medium of alcohol transfers in my alternative processes class and was immediately drawn to it. My interest in collage inspired this collection of photographs.

These collages include several parts of my body along with details of nature, including natural landscapes, plants, and animals. I wanted to create a dreamlike experience that prompts viewers to examine their own relationship among the natural world. We fit in to the natural world so effortlessly, yet we constantly push to develop what is left of it. These photographs are daydreams of a surreal world where humans and nature are inseparable.

Alcohol transfer is an alternative photographic printing process that begins with printing final edited images on crystal clear transparency film (for this project, I printed several of my image files on this film, cut them out individually, and arranged them together to create collages). The process requires watercolor paper, which is what the final printed image will appear on. A brayer is used to saturate the front and back of the watercolor paper with alcohol (in this case, hand sanitizer). Alcohol is what allows the ink from the transparency film to be transferred to the watercolor paper. Once the transparency film is laid ink side down onto the watercolor paper, a brayer is used to apply pressure to the transparency film and watercolor paper so that the ink will transfer. Finally, the film can be peeled away from the final image, where the ink has been transferred and the paper can dry.
