Tenebrism
Tenebrism is the use of extreme contrasts of light and dark in figurative compositions, looking for light that releases three-dimensional forms by means of sharp but perfectly controlled light and shade. The technique was introduced by the Italian painter Caravaggio, but can also be seen in Rembrandt and many later painters.
