Yggdrasil - VR Game

Yggdrasil - VR Game

This is a VR game developed for the Oculus Quest, during the first year of the Master's degree in Engineering of Digital Game Development. This game combines the Nordic mythology with the Avatar The Last Airbender's elemental system, in which the different element attacks are made by the player using the system's Hand-Tracking.
In the beginning, the player will be able to learn the hand movements so that he/she do the elemental attacks. Afterwards, the player, will have to destroy a few waves of enemies that will appear from different directions. When the player is able to defeat his foes, a boss, will appear and will attack the player. After the player defeats the boss, a portal will appear and the he/she will be able to go through it so that he/she goes to the next level.

For this project, a team of three people were responsible to develop a prototype, where I worked as Game & UX Designer, Character Designer & Artist, Environment Artist and VFX Artist.

Game Design
The development of the game was based on the team's feedback, where the meetings allowed us to obtain opinions and perspectives about the different areas assigned to each person. For the Game Design Document/Report, it was developed on a team effort where it was written down every step taken in to developing the game.


Character Development

Thokk
This character was the final boss of the first level of the game.

Fire Wolf Minion
The minions that the player had to defeat so that he could progress in the game.

Game Environment
The environment of the game, where the player would find himself in the middle of the stone circle. The stones in the second row had Nordic runes, where each rune represented an element.

Visual Effects

Elemental Attacks
For the player to be able to attack, he had to make specific movements with his hand.
          -Yellow - Air Slash: It created the yellow circle in front of the player's hand and it shot three yellow slashes;
          -Green - Rock Sprout: It created a green circle would appear on the ground and a rock would pop up in front of the player, serving as a shield against attacks;
          -Red - Fireball: A red circle appears in front of the player's hand and it shoots a fireball:
          -Blue - Water Spear: It created a circle in the water bowl next to the Water Rune and it would shoot water in the direction of the enemy.
Portal FX
The purpose of the portal was for the player to cross it to the next level as soon as he defeated the level's boss.
