The Velvet Underground was one of the most influential bands for rock music than any other.  Not only did they revolutionize rock through their distortive tonality paired with their gritty lyrics, but the band also gave an inside look into the reality of rock and the inner turmoil of the artist’s life. The brains behind the band was Lou Reed. As an artist, Reed has consistently influenced me by his unapologetic honesty and ability to experiment without limitation. Reed’s methods of displaying his vulnerability and experiences have resonated with me to the point of using his music as guidance through my own life experiences.

Sunday Morning is a three-part record box set celebrating the music and lyrics of Lou Reed and his band, The Velvet Underground.

Album one presents the fantasy and overwhelming euphoria something new and exciting brings. The chemicals in our bodies are moving so quickly and can feel like ecstasy. In the second album, Sunday Morning, Lou Reed writes about the acerbity of sudden consciousness. Everything good must come to an end. When the euphoria suddenly ceases before we are ready, and the sobering reality sets in, bringing intense and painful symptoms of withdrawal. The third and final album, Vanishing Act, is when the darkness of depression accepts what was lost. However, with poignancy comes the motivation for change with a new resilience. Although painful, painful experiences leave us with inner strength. With darkness, there can be new light when we look within ourselves for it.
