The true life of farm animals

This children’s nonfiction book (German title »Das wahre Leben der Bauernhoftiere«) is about todays ways of livestock farming. The urgent, detailed illustrations give realistic insights and the short, factual texts explain the different husbandries. The aim is to impart children a basic understanding for todays agriculture far away from the the usual picture book clichés. It also includes aspects like animal transport, butchery and consume, but without any shocking pictures. The book got nominated for the German youth literature award in the category children’s nonfiction book in 2021.

Idea and concept
Showing the production cycles and giving explanations why livestock farming has developed like this.
The Process
After a deep research and a small survey I defined the content and created a storyboard, whick I revised several times till it worked for me and the publisher.
Technique and layout
I used a mixed media technique for illustrating. All illustrations are hand drawn with pencils and colored digitally.
