🦥Pygmy Three-Toed Sloth🦥
Also known as the dwarf sloth or the monk sloth, it is found in a small island, Isla Escudo dr Veraguas, islands off the Panama coast. It is the smallest of all sloths species and feeds on leaves. These sloths have adapted their bodies to hang from their limbs on the trees. It lives high up in the canopy and comes down once a week to defecate. A 2012 survey showed an estimated total population of 79 individuals. It has been listed as critically endangered and also is listed has world’s 100 most threatened species. Their existence is mainly threatened due to timber harvesting and human settlements which result in a loss of habitat.
🐧Galapagos Penguin 🐧
The Galápagos penguin is found in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador. It’s is the only penguin found north of the equator. It is one of the smallest and rarest species of penguins in the world. Population levels went down because of the El Niño, but is slowly recovering. Due it its small size it has many predators.
🦎Luristan Newt🦎
The Luristan newt is the smallest of the four Neurergus salamanders, a colourful and attractive group found in the Middle East. Their attractive colouration warns predators of their toxic skin secretions. This species lives in just three fast-flowing spring-fed streams in the southern Zagros Mountains, Iran, which run through very arid shrubland. However, the newt has disappeared from one of these streams, further restricting the population. Fewer than 1,000 adult newts are thought to survive.This species is threatened by habitat loss, which is occurring as a result of wood extraction for small-scale subsistence use. The Luristan newt is extremely sensitive to environmental change because they live in arid, marginal conditions. The effects of recent severe droughts have negatively impacted this species, which depends on spring-fed streams for breeding.
🍂Golden-Rumped Elephant 🍂
This small fellow is found in Kenya, Africa. It’s name is derived from its golden fur. The golden-rumped elephant shrew is classified as endangered largely due to a fragmented forest environment.They are subject to being caught in traps, but are not targeted as sources food due to poor taste.
