Intel IoT Platform - Design Research

Human-Centered Design for Intel IoT Platform Research
My role in this project was extremely broad - spanning early-stage insight gathering and continuing right through to communicating the value and the technology transfer process. The project was part of the formative R&D activity behind the Intel IoT Platform and consisted of multiple external stakeholders, testbeds and internal business units.

My role was as a catalyst between the ethnographic researchers in the field and the development work in the lab - ensuring user needs were captured and prioritised as early as possible to inform the proof-of-concept  development in what was a very tech-heavy project.

I analysed the qualitative fieldwork from our research team in the test bed areas and distilled it down into actionable insights for the development team to create proof of concept designs.

As the design lead, communication is a critical part of communicating your design intent and I created robust design research artefacts for the development team based on the design research - personas and context scenarios. These also informed our specification documentation, communication material and dissemination effort as the project progresses. This work also helped to reformulate our assumptions on who we were designing for.
Internet of things (IoT) systems research requires consideration to all of the components that make up the service.  I created service blueprints to visualise the relationships between the components - both physical and digital. The service blueprints were used to effectively communicate the system research to key stakeholders  in a Solution Architecture Document (SAD). This was a key component in what was a successful  technology transfer of the project outputs for commercialisation. More information on the project can be found here here.
