For this project I was hired to design a mascot logo for a prawn fishing restaurant in Guangzhou, China. The idea of the restaurant is that customers sit around a large pool full of shrimp, crab and lobster and use fishing rods to catch their dinners. The restaurant has an aliens/ufos/space theme and so the logo design reflects the idea of the prawns being 'beamed up' from the pool to be eaten by the customers. My process always begins with research and I started by collecting a range of reference images that fit the theme and sketching out a lot of variations and discussing them with the client. Some of the major sources of inspiration for my design ideas were the underwater enemies from the Megaman computer games as well as the Marvin the Martian character from Looney Tunes. Initially, I took the project in a direction where the prawn featured as an alien character riding in a spaceship and fishing for stars but in the end the client felt that this was over complicated. We went back and forth several times, sharing different ideas and discussing design decisions. I sent pencil sketches that were roughly colored on photoshop to get feedback and gradually we worked towards the current solution which was finally finished and refined in adobe illustrator.
