DIT - VISUAL COMMUNICATION - 3rd YEAR
Imram Poetry Festival Billboard
This is a billboard design that was used to promote the Imram poetry festival in Dublin’s city centre in September 2012. It depicts a ‘murmuration’ of type against a cloudy sky, which was an interpretation of the poem ‘Sreang Sínte’ by Doireann Ní Ghríofa. From a distance the murmuration is not immediately recognisable as thousands of letters, but only when viewed from a closer range. Although more contemporary typefaces were considered for the collection of letters, it was decided that the Gaelic Uncial typeface Seanchló GC had a more organic feel to it through its curvatures and varying line weight, which I considered to be appropriate in visualising the subject matter of the poem. The final image is a large format poster which was shown at an exhibition as part of the festival.
