The Posy Lady: Kate Furbish

I created a cover for a theoretical book about the life of Kate Furbish, the first woman botanist of Maine. She was known for creating thousands of watercolor paintings documenting the flora of Maine. She spent her life deep in the rugged forests and rough terrain of Victorian New England, defying the norms of the day where many women weren't known for venturing out alone to "rough-it" in the wilderness.
I wanted the cover to feature Kate alone, as she often was, in a lush and foliage-full landscape.
After initial sketches, I created a finalized line drawing and a color-blocked image.
The thumbnails feature a variety of compositions with the main focus being Kate, flowers, and a lot of plants in the landscape.
You can see more sketches and illustrations from this book on my website at Kelseygrass.com
Thank you!
