For my GIT 494 class we were required to create a photo that involved some sort of drip/splash/etc. with a food or beverage. In a stroke of luck, I had just ordered the magical butterfly pea flower tea a week prior. For those who don't know what it is, butterfly pea flower is a type of flower used as a tea and is known for its deep blue color. What makes it magical though is that when lemon juice is added, it changes into a magenta color.
When I had heard about this project I just knew that I had to use it! When the time came, I was in the studio juicing lemons and setting the scene. The first photos, however, felt stagnant, despite the obvious color change. The light background was chosen so that the color change could easily be visible, but due to the lemon juice being slowly dripped in and very faint in color, it ended up disappearing into the field of white.

For higher contrast, I switched to a black background and filled a turkey baster with lemon juice so that I could shoot it into the glass and get a huge splash effect rather than a slow dribble.
These two changes automatically made the images more interesting and full of energy, and although I didn't intend to make a mess and have the tea spill out of the cup it actually created my favorite shot out of the whole series!
