A Brief Look at the US Opioid Epidemic

Based in Bristol, Pennsylvania, Dr. Bernard Ogon joined Tri-State Visiting Home Physicians, LLC, in 2013 and continues to lead the organization as medical director. Under the guidance of Dr. Bernard Ogon, the organization excels in outpatient, medicated-assisted treatment for opioid addiction.

Opioid dependency continues to pose a major health threat in the United States. Opioids are responsible for the majority of drug overdoses in the nation, with approximately 46,802 of the 67,367 drug overdose deaths in 2018 being attributed to the substances. Synthetic opioids, excluding methadone, have been particularly prevalent since 2013, accounting for two thirds of opioid overdoses. Perhaps most concerning is the fact that, despite opioid overdose deaths decreasing by about 4 percent from 2017 to 2018, the overall number of deaths in 2018 remained 400 percent higher than two decades earlier.

Geographically speaking, the Southwest, Northeast, and much of the Midwest have been hit hardest by the opioid epidemic. While California had the highest total number of opioid deaths in 2018 with 5,348, West Virginia had the highest death rate per 100,000 at 51.5.
