In my whānau, we make quilts to mark special occasions.  I made this baby quilt for my friend when her youngest daughter was born.  I was conscious that gifts received at baby showers often have a short life, both aesthetically and functionally, in addition to being made from unsustainable materials.  I wanted to create something that had sustainable origins and would age with grace, becoming a memento capable of evoking nostalgia.

Most of the materials used in the quilt are repurposed or waste materials.  The design of the quilt developed around the shape of the linen scraps from a friends graduate fashion collection.  I wanted to honour their history and retain the allusion to the garments she cut from it. The quilt is densely hand quilted to create lots of texture.
