Submission to the majority opinion, unwillingness to stand out from the crowd in order to avoid censure or even punishment. It's always stressful and has far reaching consequences. We depend on other people's opinions much more than we think. And as a result, the boundaries of "our own" and "successfully imposed on us" have long been blurred and it is sometimes not even always impossible to restore them.
