Photomontage Project
The goal of this project was to create a Photomontage, which is essentially a collage comprised of images, of any subject of our choice. For this photomontage, I decided to choose the subject of "Vintage Entertainment and Media" in order to illustrate a college that represented the aesthetic of 50s advertisements and popular entertainment. Thus, I chose the subject of my piece as Audrey Hepburn, who was a prominent actor during the 1950s and 10
Step 1:
First, I decided to import an image of Audrey Hepburn as the subject of my piece. I wanted to use a black and white image in order to emphasize an old-school-feel that would contrast with the pop of colors in the background. I removed the background of the Hepburn picture using the quick selection tool, and then I added an Outer Glow that would help emphasize the contrast between the subject and the background. Finally, I added the effect of Bevel & Emboss in order to give a more natural and 3D aspect to Hepburn.
Step 2:
Next, I imported images of several advertisements from the 50s to represent the vintage media aspect of my topic. At first, I angled all of the ads differently and made them different sizes, but it ended up being too distracting, especially with the 2 other images I hoped to add later on in the process. Thus, I reshaped all the images to be the same size ad lined them up behind Hepburn, as I believed this structure would play in well with the abstractness I hoped to add above.

Then, I merged all the layers and took down the opacity of the new merged layer to 75% in order to fade out the background and allow the monochromatic color scheme of the subject to pop.
Step 3:
For this step of the process, I really wanted to add a Hollywood sign in order to contribute to the theme of entertainment. I also thought the white sign would go well with the black and white colors of the subject, and that the blue sky would be easy to tie into other images that I could possibly add. I did not like how static the original image was, so I warped in a way that drew the eye towards the subject.

In order to make the abstractness of the Hollywood sign flow with the the structure of the ads, I added an image of dripping paint to make it look like the grass was dripping onto the ads. Then, I selected the dripping paint with the quick selection tool and used a clone stamp to add grass into the dripping paint to make a cohesive look with the Hollywood image. I wanted to add an outer glow to the dripping portion, so I separated the layers and added an outer glow to the bottom drips without interfering with the top of the Hollywood sign. This allowed the drips to stand out against the ads.
Step 4:
For my final addition to the project, I decided to incorporate an image of New York City in order to add a different perspective to the media and entertainment piece of this project. NYC represents a constant landmark of entertainment throughout American history, as it is known as the "city that never sleeps". I thought this was a good geographical addition to the Hollywood sign, as it illustrates the coast-to-coast American entertainment aesthetic that consumes society. I created a layer mask for this image in order to blend it well with the Hollywood sign. I also thought these colors tied in well with the colors of the ads. Some of the ads in the NYC image are vintage, while others are up to date. I thought this contrast symbolized how the entertainment industry has prevailed since Audrey Hepburn's era until now.
Final Product:
My final product is shown above, as it incorporates Audrey Hepburn, vintage ads, the Hollywood sign, and NYC. I hope that the combination of these photos represent a photomontage that emphasizes the span that the entertainment and media industries have reached throughout American history.
