Durban Cardboard Collectors - Packaging Design

The issue of climate change is intensifying throughout the world and many initiatives, including the act of recycling, need to be encouraged and implemented into our daily lives. The Durban inner-city Cardboard Collectors deserve their own logo and leave-behind that will increase the their validity, voice and visibility. The leave-behind should convince individuals and businesses to donate their cardboard waste to the collectors.

The cardboard collectors are hard working, committed, can be fierce when assaulted and most importantly, they recycle things that are no longer of use. Paper wasps recycle dead plants and bark that they use to create paper for their nests. In the same way, the cardboard collectors are playing an important role in the recycling process of cardboard in order to earn money to feed their families and have their own homes. I renamed the project, ‘Durban Paper Wasps’ and the value of the cardboard is reflected through what appears to be gold. Unlike other species of wasps, paper wasps are relatively content unless they are threatened or under attack. The fact that these workers rely on their hands to be able to work is significantly reflected in the hand-rendered logo.
