DL1 Project 2: Illustrator Techniques

CORE2291 Design Lab 1: Project 2 Illustrator Techniques
For this project, we were required to outline the script text for the Coca-Cola logo. This project required using the pen tool, shape builder tool, and other various Illustrator techniques. Being able to create crisp lines and images is useful for future projects in advertising and graphic arts. At the beginning of the project, my ability to create smooth curves with the pen tool was lacking. However, after completing this project I began to feel more confident. There was an extra credit opportunity to outline the Coke bottle elements which further tested our pen tool skill by creating more complex shapes.
Pattern Elements: Theme
When deciding which theme to go with, I asked myself, "Where, when, and why do I drink Coke? What makes drinking a Coke more enjoyable?" One of my favorite places is the beach. It's the perfect place to relax, admire a beautiful view.. and enjoy an ice cold Coke. I would imagine this as a summer campaign with a lot of bright colors paying homage to the sixties with lots of floral details and retro colors.
Visual Exploration
When searching for inspiration I was drawn to images that were fun and bright. With everything that has been going on with the pandemic I feel people need to be exposed to more things that bring them joy. When people see my patterns, I hope they evoke positive emotions. Maybe they simply enjoy the colors or perhaps it reminds them of a wonderful vacation with family and friends.
Pattern Sketches
Using tools like the pen tool, rotate tool, and shape builder tool, I was able to create fun, detailed, shapes for my pattern.
Final Pattern
I really enjoyed the pattern making process. I still have techniques to learn but I feel more confident in my ability to use this tool after working on this project. To achieve the first composition, I mapped out a grid. I knew I had six motifs to work with and I started playing around with my flowers and using them to frame the motif. Once I knew how the flowers would be arranged I was able to add in each motif. My second pattern I decided to drop all the color and focus on line. I adjusted the variable width of each motif until I got my desired look. For color, I selected a light and dark contrast in my blue tones.
