CORE2291 Design Lab 1: Project 2 Illustrator Techniques

This project required me to trace the Coco-Cola script and create two different design patterns for the brand. I practiced using the pen tool, curvature tool, and the blob brush. I also learned how to create designs using various geometric shapes, as well as using gradient and pattern fills

Illustrator Techniques
After placing the image on the art board, I made it into a template so it would be easier to distinguish the picture and the drawings.
I used the pen tool to outline the script. Sometimes when using the pen tool and creating curves, "knots" may appear. To get rid of these knots, I use the anchor point tool to move and recorrect the curve.
Because I didn't trace directly on the line, I had to use the curvature tool to fix it.
I created a color swatch to use on the script and the radial gradient fill on the circle. Here is the final circle color.
The final part was using the shape builder tool to create holes so it looks as though the script is embedded into the circle.

Visual Exploration
For my pattern design, I wanted to focus on floral mandalas and mosaic patterns. I admire how simple geometric shapes fit together like a puzzle to create a bigger image in mosaics and the kaleidoscope effect in mandalas. Flowers are my go to doodles so it will be interesting to add this style to them.
Pattern Sketches
For my patterns, I tried to imagine what would be on the label of the coke bottle as an extra layer. I created my own floral pattern using a series of geometric shapes and the pencil tool to create the petals in roses. I used the pencil tool to create the flower itself and a series of lines to create a mosaic pattern. I colored with the blob brush.
Creating the Final Patterns
I wanted to keep my designs simple, so instead of combining small elements from each design to create a new pattern, I decided to combine the mandalas together and create another lotus flower in a different color. Instead of coloring the lotus with the blob brush, I used different color triangles to create the mosaic. It seems a bit chaotic, but that's what I enjoy most about it.
When making my pattern, I knew that I wanted to use a gradient as my background. I chose to do a purple gradient for the lotus flowers, as purple reminds me of spring, and a similar gradient to the Coca-Cola logo for the mandalas.
