Assignment Description:

Using the highest quality camera you have access to, perform a photoshoot (6) of a pet or person in various poses/scenarios, leaving room for cropping later. Use the same subject for all 6 photos—these should be your original photos (well-lit, high resolution, in focus). In Photoshop, crop each image to tell a more interesting story. Present as a new Behance Project your 6 before/after photos. Select the best composition and tell us what story this photo suggests or inspires.

For the photoshoot I used my Canon EOS Rebel T6 DSLR camera to capture the quirky personality of my cat  Dipper. This camera has been a great starter camera that has suited my needs so far as a graphic design student at Wake Tech.

In capturing these photos, I realized the task was not as easy as it sounds to achieve a quality photo of an energetic animal that may not like to stay still for very long. However, Dipper was a natural at posing and demanding the attention of the camera with only needing a few toys as motivation.

One of my favorite poses show below includes his stuffed mouse toy in the background of the shot. Dipper stands in a proud pose as he offers the mouse to me after leaving it behind from a hunt. Cropping out the mouse completely would have left this story element out and condensed the photo too much. The mouse also gives eye direction in creating a triangular movement to his front paws, tail and back to the mouse.

In the editing process of all these photos, I started by cropping out any unnecessary information I didn’t want to include such as rug lines, excess negative space, and in one shot my leg. I tried to follow as close to the Rule of Thirds as I could, but not every photo needs to follow it exactly. I then went in with some standard color adjustments just to perk up the images.

Overall I’m happy with the outcome of this simple skill test project and look forward to future ones. Dipper definitely looks like he’s ready for a nap in the final images. Thanks for being my muse little buddy.
