Taken Out of Context
by Laura Greenwood
For this series, I found my inspiration in eye-catching buildings in downtown Austin, Texas.  Taking them out of their original context, I created a unique new perspective of each one.

This series of photographs was created with Polaroid emulsion transfers. An emulsion transfer is a Polaroid type 669 or 665 print that is soaked in hot water until the top layer of emulsion starts to lift away.  I then transfer the photograph into a tray of cold water and carefully work the image away from the paper backing.  What is left is a tissue paper thin membrane, with the image on it.

This layer is now transferred to a new surface; the receptive surface in these images is archival watercolor paper.  As the image is placed onto the watercolor paper, I manipulate and move it gently with my fingertips.  Each image is a one of a kind creation; the scratches, creases, folds and tears are all a natural part of this process.
