Literary Book Cover - Limi

Literary Magazine - LIMI
The brief was to : Contribute to the cover design of a literary magazine and supporting identity and layout. Select one story, use that story as inspiration for your cover. The project requires you to do the following:
1. Come up with a suitable and original name for the magazine.
2. Create an appropriate and eye-catching cover illustration using a digital or hand drawn medium inspired by your selected story
3. Create layouts for your selected story and poem in InDesign. Each layout must be accompanied by the title, author’s name and the description of the story/poem in English and why it needs to be told.

“In celebration of Mother Tongue Day UJ launched a writing competition in February 2020. Entrants were asked to write a story in the language/s of their choice.”
Mother tongue - TONGUE. I selected the word limi which is a word for TONGUE in a different languages.
TONGUE
Leleme - Sotho
Rurimi - Shona
ulimi - Zulu/Swahili
ulwimi - Xhosa
I cut off extra characters and landed on limi... = limi literary magazine

Selected story
Madzikirira Erudo (love paralysis) (English, Shona & Ndebele)
By Hope Tariro Hove

Exerpt that inspired the cover
“murderer, you and your people burnt our home, l hope you rot in hell.”

The story takes us back to Rhodesia, the old Zimbabwe where the tribal war between the Ndebele and the Shona was brewing. Boy meets girl. Boy falls in love with girl. But they cannot be together because girl is Ndebele and boy is Shona. My solution  has a very strong Ndebele art inspiration. Read more about the Gukurahundi massacre here..
I wanted to demonstrate violence and loss experienced by our Ndebele character without the blood and gore.
