STUDENT WORK, 2020
The Advocate is an LGBTQ-focused lifestyle magazine that covers a range of topics from arts and entertainment to politics. The current audience is people in the LGBTQ+ community between the ages of 20 and 45.

For this redesign, I wanted the magazine to appeal to a slightly younger audience, age 16-35, so that younger people could be made more aware of LGBTQ+ representation and their community. The redesigned masthead includes a plus sign to represent the several different groups under the umbrella LGBTQ community and is turned on its side because it goes against what is “typical.” Vibrant, striking photography is used for the covers of the magazine to get the reader’s attention and to appeal to a more youthful clientele and seem more fun since the original magazine has a more dull and serious tone. The RuPaul spread’s artistic direction comes from the many neon signs seen at a drag show or bar.
