Doing The Unstuck - Typography Zine

  • Cover in plastic sleeve

Doing the Unstuck is an expressive typography zine that presents artist; Sol LeWitt's letter to friend and fellow artist Eva Hesse. The letter is a Lewitt's response to Hesse began suffering from creative block and self-doubt shortly after moving from New York to Germany with her husband. She reached out to her friend for counsel and consolation.

The text is supported by lyrics from Robert Smith, for the band; The Cure's 1992 album, Wish. The lyrics explore the melancholy ups and downs of being an artist. While writing the lyrics for Wish, Smith felt so isolated and experienced the same uncertainty Eva Hesse was experiencing almost 30 years previously. Robert Explains that  "Some days it would be really, really great, and other days it would be really, really horrible.

I created this zine during a time of personal uncertainty. Creating this project allowed me to explore different forms of mediums to create something that I never would have before, which is exactly what the artists I drew inspiration from are saying through words in this zine.
